Comprehensive Eye Examinations

When we do eye exams, we refuse to cut corners. We always schedule ample time so you will never feel rushed. We provide complete eye care for both adults and children. Our comprehensive eye examinations check your eyes inside and out for glaucoma, cataracts and all other eye diseases as well as high blood pressure, diabetes and other systemic diseases. Your visual skills and abilities are carefully evaluated and we pride ourselves on the accuracy of our eyeglass prescriptions. In spite of our track record for highly accurate prescriptions, there are eyes that can be unstable for reasons ranging from medications to illness. In these rare cases, we will gladly re-examine the patient and remake the glasses.

Technology is rapidly changing the eye care industry. We utilize the latest in diagnostic equipment and are committed to keeping up with whatever advances will come next.

Contact Lenses

With over 23 years experience in optometry, Dr. Barnes is experienced with many advanced specialty lenses. We have a large inventory of all types of contact and can dispense the day of your visit in most cases.

Another popular area of specialty contact lenses are the Bifocal designs we fit. Since such a large number of Baby Boomers need clearer near vision, it is our most popular specialty area.

Think of wearing a “retainer contact” lens at night and waking up with clear vision for daytime. New Orthokeratology lenses can attain this clear result in much less time and are a safe and affordable alternative to Lasik or Intacs.

Watch for our coupons for great deals on colored soft lenses. See if you like yourself with blue or green eyes!

Dr. Barnes also specializes in dry eyes and works with procedures to enhance contact lens wear for these patients. Since dry eyes affect most women over forty-five and most men over sixty; these new treatments significantly improve contact lens comfort and clarity.

Optical Dispensing

We have a new state of the art optical and laboratory to get your glasses to you perfect and quickly every time. We specialize in the newest lens designs as well as new frame materials and designs. We also carry sports frames and sunglasses to meet your every deed. Many frames a made of “rocket science” materials that are stronger yet thinner and lighter than other frames. We also provide many of our local industries with safety frames and lenses. New computer lenses help many patients work more efficiently at heir desk so that they are more productive.

Laser Vision Correction

Dr. Barnes had Lasik two years ago and has no distance correction. It is an absolutely WOW experience!!! Let her evaluate you for this life changing procedure done here in San Antonio…

You go home in about one hour with notably better vision and wake up the next morning able to read your clock across the room! We work with corneal surgeons to get the best results for you.

You can finance Lasik for less than $80.00 a month. Ask us about the easy application process.

Preventative Vision Care

Vision, in the broadest sense, is the global ability of the brain to extract, process and act on information presented to the eye. This complex process can be thought of as three major but related areas: visual acuity, which is largely dependent upon refractive status and eye health; visual efficiency skills, representing eye focusing, teaming, and tracking skills; and visual information processing, representing the ability to recognize and discriminate visual stimuli and to interpret them correctly based upon previous experience. Every examination we provide, regardless of age, has these thoughts in mind.

Eye Infections, Eye Injuries, Dry Eyes

We provide emergency care during office hours and after hours. Dr. Barnes sees many medical emergencies including red irritated eyes, floaters or spots in the vision, flashing lights and any pain in the eye. She is also certified to treat Glaucoma and many other eye health problems! Call our main telephone number, 210-651-5800 and we will get you in quickly. We work with many local industries to provide them with emergency scheduling for on the job injuries and infections. We also provide follow up care for more serious injuries.

Of course, we’d rather teach patients how to care for their eyes before an injury occurs. Ask about our safety vision program.

DRY EYES

Many people experience red, scratchy eyes. They may be unable to wear contacts lenses or they may have eyes that burn or tear when doing close or computer work. The exact nature of your dry eye can be determined with special dyes and a thorough examination. We can then provide a specialized therapy plan that may include new drops or in-office minor procedures to alleviate dry eye symptoms.

Eye Diseases; Cataracts, Glaucoma, Diabetes

Cataracts: The natural lens in the eye gradually becomes less clear as we get older. When opacities develop in the lens and the lens gets too hazy, vision will be impaired. Our office can diagnose and manage cataract care. When the cataract affects the vision to the extent that you cannot read or see distant objects comfortably, we will recommend cataract surgery. Our office co-manages with cataract specialists that are proven experts in cataract surgery. Cataract surgery can provide you with a bright new world of vision.

Glaucoma: Glaucoma gradually destroys the optic nerve tissue in the back of the eye. The greatest danger of glaucoma stems from the fact that the disease is painless and without obvious symptoms until significant damage has occurred. The most common cause is from pressure being too high inside the eye, but vascular disease and other diseases can also cause glaucoma. We always monitor for glaucoma during routine eye examinations. Tests include checking the pressure of the eye, screening for peripheral vision defects and analyzing the appearance of the optic nerve. If you are diagnosed with glaucoma, we typically prescribe medications that lower the eye pressure. Most forms of glaucoma are successfully treated with eye drops. Laser treatments and eye surgery are secondary treatments that offer alternative ways to treat more advanced glaucoma.

Diabetes: Diabetic patients should have a dilated retinal examination each year. Laser treatments have proven to slow the progression of retinal eye disease for many patients. Diabetes often stimulates the growth of new blood vessels in the back of the eye, which ultimately leak and damage the retina. If this condition is discovered early, laser treatment can destroy these vessels. We have the latest instruments used to detect changes in the back of the eye. If we discover advancing diabetic eye disease that can be treated or needs further evaluation, we will refer you for consultation and further testing to a board certified retinal specialist.

Low Vision Services

People who have lost eyesight due to injuries or eye disease need special types of products to help them function as independently as possible. We offer a full range of these products through our office. Our paraoptometric staff is trained to demonstrate the use of some of these devices. They range all the way from a simple hand magnifier to a closed circuit TV system.

In addition, we can direct those who have low vision problems to products that will help them carry on the day-to-day tasks that they need to perform. In some cases we can set up a program for the low vision patient with the National Library of Congress to receive "books on tapes", which is a service for the blind.

Vision Therapy

Being a Behavorial Optometrist for many years provides Dr. Barnes insight to many children as well as adults with deficient visual skills and learning difficulties. Many children with dyslexia and eye coordination problems can be helped with vision therapy.

Myopia control and reduction is a large area of concern for Dr. Barnes. Evaluations reveal that many children have eye teaming and focusing proble4ms causing eyestrain and unnecessary worsening in corrective lenses. This frightening increased distance blurriness can be helped with vision therapy, learning lenses and “retainer contact lenses”.

The Computer Eyestrain Epidemic

Many people, including students and retirees work most of the day on the computer. Some of the eye problems include tired and red eyes, burning and itching eyes, blurred vision at the computer and while driving home in the evening and headaches. These annoyances do not even address the neck, back and hands aches. Since the computer will only become more a part of your life, let’s talk about how we can soothe our overworked eyes.

Many people have a slight eye focusing or eye-teaming problem that translates to very real eyestrain and headaches at work. A thorough evaluation by a Behavioral Optometrist can uncover these deficiencies. Then appropriate lenses and/or therapy can treat the causes.

Staring at the screen reduces the blinking process so that your eyes dry more quickly. Dry eyes feel scratchy, burning and can also have blurry vision. Many people feel better with artificial tears and rewetting drops. This drying especially bothers contact lens wearers and can reduce contact lens wear.

The computer screen is at a midrange which causes many of our over 45 year-olds problems while using their reading glasses. Some newer computer and progressive bifocal design lenses work nicely and relieve some eye and neck strain.

Call our office to schedule a lifestyle vision evaluation. Perhaps these new remedies will improve your computer work.

Corneal Refractive Therapy (CRT)

Corneal Refractive Therapy (CRT) is where patients wear a "retainer" contact lens only while sleeping to correct vision so no glasses or contacts are needed during the day! Please contact our office at 210-651-5801 for more details!
